Project sustainability

To obtain sustainability of this project, both the villagers and Temasek Polytechnic must be able to benefit from this project.

How can the villagers benefit?

Besides using bagasse to deactivate bacteria in human waste, bagasse has a few other uses that the villagers can utilize as sources of income. Bagasse can be made into more sustainable products such as paper. Once the villagers are able to transform bagasse into different products, these products can be sold as a source of income. Bagasse can also be burnt to produce fuel and heat, which may be useful for the villagers.

How can Temasek Polytechnic benefit?

New methods of transforming bagasse into usable products can be developed through collaboration with the Centre for Research & Opportunities in Plant Science (CROPS) at Temasek Polytechnic. Every year, a group of students can be selected to learn and develop new products from bagasse. These students can go down to the Negros Occidental, Philippines and conduct short workshops on transforming bagasse into new products for the villagers. This way, the villagers will continue to learn other ways that bagasse can be used and earn an income at the same time.

Furthermore, these students would be able to learn how to use nitrogen and phosphorous testing kits and pH strips and the science behind these testing methods. This would enable monitoring to be done while the students have an opportunity to learn. The students would also be exposed to a new and unique culture and be able to interact with the villagers to learn about their daily lives.
